The Terra Vitis association

Terra Vitis was created 25 years ago by and for grape farmers and winegrowers. Above all, it is all about conviction, sharing and common sense.

The commitments made in favour of sustainable grape viticulture have made Terra Vitis the only national certification for sustainable winegrowing.

Day after day we advance, working with the members of the Terra Vitis network, moving towards a more responsible way of growing grapes, a way that is more respectful of the earth and of mankind.

Terra Vitis:
the history of our commitment

At the origin of Terra Vitis is a group of committed Beaujolais winegrowers who decided to join forces around their shared convictions.

In 1998 they created as association to reflect this vision, with their desire for living, thriving soils worked with respect and common sense at the centre. They came together with the aim of making quality wine while protecting the environment, in the present and future.

soon found favour across France and many winegrowers joined this initiative which was a first in the wine sector.

They embraced the Terra Vitis project because it offers a clear, concrete answer to sustainable development issues while optimising terroir and traditions – both of which are important to our network members.

The Fédération Nationale Terra Vitis was founded in 2001 and grew quickly. In the last five years our membership has doubled, proof if it were needed that the responsible, sustainable approach we uphold is moving in the right direction.

Today we have 1,924 members, including 1,842 grape farmers and wine growers, 61 cooperative wineries and 32 wine merchants.

Is there another way to make wine?

An alternative way that allows viticulture to be 100% responsible.
An approach that is truly sustainable and global, from vine to wine glass.

For 25 years, TERRA VITIS members have put their faith in this alternative route.

For 25 years we have been working alongside those who want to work well, and to work better.

For 25 years we have been certifying their environmental, social and economic practices.
From grape farmers to winegrowers, be they independent or cooperative members, our 1,800 members are committed to this pioneering, voluntary approach.

All our members have chosen to strive for a balance between environmental respect, the well-being of people, and the longevity of their businesses.

All our members respect our strict rules and submit to stringent annual checks.

All our members accept the need for total transparency in their way of working and the traceability of their wines.

All our members continually question their practices with the aim of being ever-more respectful of nature, and ever-more in line with consumer expectations.

All our members are working towards passing on their vines, their businesses and know-how.

All our members are certified Terra Vitis – the only national certification for responsible viticulture, specific to the wine sector and recognised by the French Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

Our values

A professional approach

“Knowing that we have worked well, and being able to prove it”

Honesty

“Doing what we say, and saying what we do”

Generosity

“Always do good, and always do better for the common good”

Our mission:
sustainable production, now and in the future

Based on the three pillars of sustainable development, Terra Vitis has created a coherent approach to guide its members towards sustainable production.

We work in two main areas:

Providing support for Terra Vitis-certified winegrowers and grape farmers to help them progress in terms of sustainable viticulture.

Adapting farming practices to improve them for the environment, consumers, grape farmers and winegrowers, working in close collaboration with producers.

Terra Vitis members make progress with a demanding but pragmatic approach, thanks to the help of a network of people working in the field who are aware of the constraints encountered by winegrowers on a daily basis.

For consumers and distributors, Terra Vitis-certified wines are a guarantee of quality wines made with respect for the environment, for society as a whole and for the economic sustainability of the estates concerned.

We move forward together in search of the best possible balance between respect for the environment, the well-being of people and the sustainability of French businesses, guided by common sense and our shared values.

The seven regional Terra Vitis associations

Terra Vitis members are grouped in regional associations in each of France’s winegrowing regions. These branches carry out the Fédération Nationale’s missions at a local level, working with winegrowers and grape farmers.

They are also the link between the Fédération Nationale and the members in the regions, and are in charge of auditing and certifying the businesses, with the help of approved external bodies.

Our team:
working with producers in the field

Our teams are in touch with our members on a daily basis, thanks to solid local integration and a constant presence in the field.

We work alongside our members all the way to certification, from the initial business audit through to the award of their certification. Terra Vitis handles the training, advising and guiding of producers and their teams so that each participant has the necessary tools and knowledge to make the changes required for responsible and sustainable viticulture. Finally, we audit the estates with a view to their certification, and run the local network.

is vast, solid, and built on collective strength: each member can rely on it as they advance.
Building contacts and sharing information and experience are an integral part of the association and of our approach.
